The network named REMONOR (REseau MOllusqueNORmandie) aims to assess mortality, growth and tissue quality of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated in Normandy over an annual cycle. This local network relies on the same material and methods as the national one named REMORA (REseau Mollusques Ressources Aquacoles). The study was carried out in 17 sites, which were distributed in the four basins where oyster rearing occurs in Normandy (West and East coast of Cotentin, Baie des Veys and Meuvaines). In 2003, a new site was added, which was located in the area of Ver-Sur-Mer (Calvados). The results obtained in 2003 showed a low annual mortality for adults (8%) as well as for juveniles (10%). Growth was also low for the two age classes of oyster... |

The regional monitoring network REMONOR, relying on the experience of IFREMER's REMORA national network, each year assesses the mortality, growth and quality for two age classes ("adults" = 2 years and "juveniles" = 1 year) of cup oysters, distributed among various farm sites in the main oyster farming sectors of Lower Normandy. This network, led in collaboration by LERN (Environment Resources Laboratory) and SMEL (Coastline Installations Public-Private Entity), this year welcomes a new farm site in Veules les Roses, in Seine Maritime (76), bringing to 18 the total number of monitored sites. For operational reasons, a reduced monitoring protocol was conducted in 2005 on this last farm site, which will not take on the network's standardised protocol until... |

Each year, the regional network REMONOR assesses the mortality, growth and quality of cupped oysters in two age classes ("adults", 2 years old; "juveniles", 1 year old) at various stations in the main oyster farming areas in Normandy. We used the protocol established by the national network REMORA. REMONOR is implemented by the Normandy Environment Resources Laboratory (LERN) in conjunction with the Joint Association for Coastal Fisheries (SMEL). This year, a new station at Fermanville (NC01), in the north of the Manche "département», was integrated into the network. This is the first deep-water station of the regional network.... |

Oyster culture structures support a host of epibionts belonging to the same suspension-feeding guild, which are considered to be potential competitors for food with cultivated oysters. In an intertidal shellfish ecosystem on the northern French coast, an approach based on stable isotopes (C-13 and N-15) was used to investigate intra- and interspecific food resource partitioning among cultivated oysters and the main associated wild sessile epibionts such as polychaetes, barnacles, mussels and ascidians. The main objective of the present study was to determine inter- and intraspecific food partitioning, along with small-scale spatial variability, within the guild of suspension feeders. We demonstrated that interspecific competition was limited among... |

Summer mortalities have been observed in French shellfish areas (including Normandy) since 1994, but origin of this syndrome remains unclear and is suspected to be caused by a combination of several interacting extrinsic (biotic and abiotic) and intrinsic (genetic, physiological, immunological) factors. The French research program, MOREST aimed to identify the origin of oyster summer mortality along the French coast, focusing on the interactions between oysters, their pathogens, and the environment. The present study analyzed spatio-temporal variation in growth, condition and mortality in spat, and half-grown and market-sized oysters reared from February 2000 to October 2003 at six stations within two different areas in the Bay of Veys, Normandy: Grandcamp... |

Food sources for cultivated marine bivalves generally are not well identified, although they are essential for a better understanding of coastal ecosystems and for the sustainability of shellfish farming activities. In addition to phytoplankton, other organic matter sources (OMS), such as microphytobenthos and detritus (of terrestrial or marine origins), can contribute significantly to the growth of marine bivalves. The aim of this study was to identify the potential food sources and to estimate their contributions to the growth of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) in two contrasting trophic environments of Normandy (France): the Baie des Veys (BDV) and the Lingreville area (LIN). Two sites were studied in the BDV area (BDV-S and BDV-N) and one in the... |

The French project "Morest", coordinated by IFREMER, aims to a better understanding of the causes of summer mortalities in juvenile oysters by a multidisciplinary approach. Within this program, a first generation (G1) was bred in 2001 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for this trait in French populations. 17 half-sib families (HSF) including 44 full-sib families (FSF) were obtained in the G1, and each FSF was reared in three sites along the French coast during the summer period. Significant differences in survival were observed among HSF, clearly indicating a genetic basis for survival. Estimation of heritability for survival was very high: 0.81  0.29. In 2002, 3 "good" HSF and 3 "bad" HSF were selected on their survival... |

Proximate biochemical analysis (proteins, lipids and carbohydrates) are performed on a regular basis by the various laboratories fom the Aquaculture Resources Directorate. Methods initially developed to analyse hydrological parameters were firstly transfered to assess meat components.1t appears now important to review and update the commonly used methods (Lowry et al., (1951), Dubois et al.,(l956), Marsh et Weinstein, (1966)), for our specifie purposes. A round table was organized to facilitate discussion among researchers and technicians from both Directorates 'Aquaculture Resources' and 'Product Valorization'and external partners, University of Caen. Several communications reviewing former and recent studies were done. Colleagues from the Directorate... |

Summer mortality associated with juveniles of the oyster Crassostrea gigas is the result of a complex interaction between the host, pathogens and environment. Divergent selection based on summer survival have been applied to produce families with resistant and susceptible progeny. Here, we describe the use of suppression subtractive hybridization to generate 150 clones that were differentially regulated between resistant and susceptible F2 progeny. The nucleotide sequence of these 150 clones was determined. Among the 25 unique sequences that matched with the products of known genes, those putatively implicated in energy generation (12%) and immune function (16%), systems suspected to be implicated in summer mortality, were extended and analyzed by real... |
